Monday the Mundane

Other than it's colder than tits outside and the snow still miraculously falls no matter how frigid, it was a boring day...not on a beach...and definitely not in Florida. Sigh. Our new departure date looks like it will be February 26th.

I am listening to Book #2 in the Marnie Baranuik Files series by AJ Aalto, called Death Rejoices. I'm liking this one less so far. The tongue in cheek humor is starting to wear on me a bit, and the whack a person in the head with a 2x4 foreshadowing is even worse. But, it's a fun read on many other levels and the characters are fleshed out well. I think there are 5 of these books in the series (so far) and I probably will continue the series, but I might need a short break after this book.

Pre-Packing Frenzy

It's a wintry, icy, snowy tundra here in Illinois. Hubs suggested we leave for Florida on Wednesday night or Thursday morning instead of Friday. He didn't need to twist my arm! My nail polish strips might not make it in time, but I'm ready for spring like temperatures!

Bought groceries for our trip today after my eye appointment. (Eye is still ailing. I have more drops and my eyes were still too messed up to test for prescription lenses.) I'm making yuca fries and Cuban style turkey paninis tonight for dinner. I bought extra turkey to make sandwiches to bring on our trip.

I have a hair appointment on Wednesday. I've gotten as far as throwing a bunch of clothes and other travel stuff into my suitcase, so packing is happening. I need to make a list so I don't forget anything. We may be gone up to 10 days this time around (depends if we decide to do any serious house-hunting while we're there).

Mermaid Medicine

Made by Ann-Grethe Laird of Purple Crow Designs
Made by Ann-Grethe Laird of Purple Crow Designs

It's a new day and my eyes are feeling slightly better. Just in time for an eye appointment tomorrow! Isn't that the way it goes, sometimes? Anyway, they're still not good and I'm wearing my goggles more than my head likes already today, so we'll see how it goes.

I felt compelled to order a mermaid necklace from Shimmy Mob (it does not explicitly say that the proceeds benefit the NFP but it spoke to me specifically because it was on the website). I wouldn't say that I'm super fanatic about mermaids, but I do have a novel I started writing many years ago where mermaids were important characters. I love the ocean. I love seals and sea lions, dolphins, manatees--and I have a fascination with mermaid lore. Mostly though, I got it to remind myself that I am resilient (I'm very drawn to the moon, water and the tide right now...I'm ready to renew my spirit on the beach!!) and also to make the transition from midwestern semi-rural life to beach life go more smoothly. It's a constant reminder that we plan to move by the end of the year, and motivates me to keep purging, simplifying, donating, etc. My necklace came without a pearl, but it is beautiful and I haven't taken it off since I got it.

Eyes on Fire

the flame burns hot

and reddens all I see

for I am not

where I should be

the passions burn

and I must write

but the fires, I've learned

are filled with might

so, with charred feathers

and bloodshot eyes

storms must be weathered

so I can rise

My eyes are doing slightly better, which is a really good thing because I'm working at the law office later this week. It'll be nice to replenish some of the extra money I spent on Christmas gifts. The eyeballs are still hating on me quite a bit, and I don't work until Wednesday, so I am still trying to baby them and figure out the right balance for wearing the goggles to preserve my eyes but taking the goggles off in time to prevent a migraine (I do NOT have that balance figured out yet).

I'll be going in to get my hair done soon. I have a gift certificate for a fancy salon, but I don't know if they'll be equipped to do my crazy colors or if they are more conservative, so I need to give them a call. If they don't do crazy colors, I'm considering a facial. I have that lovely butterfly rash on my face (though it is not as pronounced as other lupies I know) and I'd like to see if there is a way to clear that up without medication.

I am what eye am

So much of my life these days revolves around what I can and cannot handle with my eyes/vision. So, I bought myself an early Christmas gift, a Renphro eye mask.

So far, so good.
So far, so good.

I have been battling a sinus/eye infection for the past couple of weeks, so this came at a great time. The eye mask was set to arrive on Saturday. I work full days at the law firm tomorrow, Friday and Monday, so the fact it arrived today is AWESOME! I also picked up some Goldenseal. Whenever I can wipe out an infection with Goldenseal, I'm all for it because I've had sooooo many infections (thank you, lupus) the past 30 some-odd years, that antibiotics are losing their efficacy.

I actually met hubs at his pinball place today. They are defying the governor's orders so they are open, but space everyone to be 6 ft apart, etc. and hubs used the hand sanitizer they placed by the machine pretty religiously. Everyone had masks if they weren't actively drinking or eating. I'll post more about that in the next couple of days, but I do want to mention that my fears are greater than I imagined. 3 months ago, this wouldn't have bothered me, but with the uptick in COVID cases this past month, I wasn't altogether comfortable and this reinforced my plan to mostly buy online this year with some small business purchases sprinkled in.

I'm making stir-fry tonight, so need to jet.

Nursery Nightmare?

Creepy Humpty has been tending bar at our house for over a decade! He moved out today.
Creepy Humpty has been tending bar at our house for over a decade! He moved out today.

When we bought Humpty at an auction in the early 2000s, we thought he was a great conversation piece and would add interest to our home. Creepy-cute. A throw-back to how creepy all of our childhood memorabilia is (though this pre-dates even an old fossil like myself--this would have been 1930s/40s). He really doesn't fit our aesthetic though. We're both hippies (honestly, I would call hubs a yuppie with hippie flashbacks! lol) so this doesn't vibe well with that. Now our basement, thus the bar area where Humpty lived and worked since he moved in with us, is in the theme of sunflowers --and with no nursery room horrors to be found! We have a full, finished basement that walks out into our patio & backyard, which is also sunflower themed. Anyway, Humpty found a new home today and I was actually sadder about it than I anticipated. (My daughter, who now lives in California is quite happy he's gone because he terrified her and her teen friends back in the day! haha) I must have waxed nostalgic quite a bit, because the new owner, as he was packing Humpty into his trunk, assured me that Humpty would be well taken care of. ♥
